Shively Police

The Shively Police Department got its start on May 23, 1938 when the small community met in the Commercial Club House to initiate incorporation into a city.

The Shively Police Department is organized into four divisions. They are COMMAND, PATROL, C.I.D. (Criminal Investigations Division), and COMMUNICATIONS.

The patrol, or uniformed division makes up the largest portion of the police department. It consists of three platoons of full-time officers supplemented by a flex platoon of part-time officers.

Whenever a crime requires more resources and time than the patrol division can provide, then the CID or Criminal Investigations Division is called in. Some examples of crimes that CID handles are homicide, rape, robbery and other violent crimes, major burglaries and fraud cases. They also handle surveillance operations and along with the patrol division the tracking and apprehension of fugitives.

The Communications division is the civilian component of the police department. Although Telecommunications Officers (TCO's) are non-sworn, they play a vital role in the department. Communications handles the calls for service from the public and other agencies whether received via 911, non-emergency phone lines, teletype, or from individuals who walk into the station.

Shively now operates on the MetroSafe 800MHz digital system.
